June 24, 2019

Suzy Furrer of Apparel Arts joins us to chat about patternmaking. From creating a moulage through to drafting patterns, Suzy has so much knowledge to share. We also talk about building her design school and literally writing the book on patternmaking!

  • Moulage: Tight-fitting mould of the upper body, from the neck to the low hip.
  • Sloper: A time-saving template pattern based on the moulage with added ease. Also known as a block.
  • Patternmaking Basics: The Bodice Sloper

    Interesting show.
I want to get into doing some patternmaking. So far mainly customised existing patterns.
I’m intrigued as to recommendations for patternwear for menswear books or structure/architecture of men’s clothing after seeing the title of Suzy’s book. I have Winifred Aldrich which seems pretty good.
Also nice to hear that Suzy will be putting up some of her course contents online since I’m nowhere near her classes.

Stevo, we are glad you enjoyed it! Have you listened to our David Coffin episode? He talks about shirtmaking specifically, but is some helpful information in there which you may find interesting: https://lovetosewpodcast.com/episodes/episode-91-shirtmaking-with-david-page-coffin/

Love your podcasts! I just attended the Pant Drafting Class at the Saskatchewan Stitches Conference in Humboldt Saskatchewan in early June. Jan Bones taught the class. It was like magic. We took our measurements, and on a blank piece of paper drafted a pants sloper based on our measurements. Then we sewed up a test garment and then a few more adjustments which were transfered back to the pattern and I have a pattern sloper for pants for myself! I still can’t believe it as pant fitting has been so problematic for me for years. I will be using it lots in the next few months! So I totally understand what she is talking about here. I will be looking up her classes on Bluprint! Thanks!

Wow, this sounds like an amazing experience, Kathy! We are happy to hear you had such a positive experience and that you are now equipped to make all the pants 🙂 Thanks for listening to the podcast!
