Re:Episode 155 Fabric Shopping
I live in Alaska in a small community (33,000 pop), we do have a couple of shops — mainly directed towards quilting. One store does have garment fabric and I do shop there and the owner is willing to order fabrics based on requests. Mainly I keep a list of wants so when we go down south I head to fabric shops wherever we go.
Shopping online is fraught with all kinds of problems–shipping is a big problem, I have cancelled an order when I saw the shipping cost especially when it is more than the cost of fabric.
Color is another problem, but I have discovered fiber reactive dye which works great for cottons, linen, rayon, bamboo and more.
Annette, that’s so true that shipping can be costly and that true fabric colour can be a challenge to capture. We are happy to hear that you have found a process that works well for you! It’s great that your local fabric shop can help meet your needs in that way 🙂
Love your podcast. Would like to add another great on-line fabric shop, Stylemaker. I had several questions regarding a certain group of fabrics and they got back to me immediately. Beautiful fabrics. There are several you tube videos showcasing their fabric.
Amazing! Thanks for sharing!
Great show! How do I tell the difference between low and high quality linen? What should I look for online and in person?
This is the first time I have listened to your podcast and thoroughly enjoyed it. As far as ordering fabric online from the UK – there is no duty in Canada on fabric produced in the EU, at least that was the case the last time I ordered fabric from Britain. Once Britain is out of the EU that may change. The company I ordered from (Merchant and Mills) offered flat rate for delivery, making it more worthwhile to maximize your order, depending on your finances, of course.
Thanks so much for listening, Terri! We are happy you found us 🙂 Thanks also for the international shipping tip too. This is great to hear!
