Shibori dyeing resources:

Tools/supplies you will need for dyeing:

  • Apron
  • Fabric or yarn
  • Mordant – for natural dyeing
  • Dyestuff
  • Kitchen scale and/or measuring spoons
  • Large stock pot with lid
  • Large plastic bucket for soaking/rinsing
  • Wooden spoon or paddle for stirring
  • Tongs for pulling fabric out of hot bath
  • Heavy-duty heat-safe gloves – preferably that go to your elbow!

General Steps:

  • Scouring: This is the process of pre-washing your fabric with the appropriate soap so that you are preparing it for the dye bath.
  • Mordanting (for natural dyeing): Mordanting is a soaking process that helps your natural dyes become colourfast.
  • Dyeing: This is the magical part!
  • Modifier/Post-mordant/Colour-pointing/over-dye (applies to natural dyeing): You can further change the colour of a natural dye with a final soak in a modifier such as iron, or an overdye.
  • After Dyeing: Gently wash your fabric in lukewarm water without soap.

Great podcast! Just listened to the one on dying. It was a great introductory overview. There could have been more on health and safety. Important to mention use of a respirator for prolonged exposure to dye fumes. Also safety goggles ( mixing dye powders and exposure to fumes as well). Lastly, is it safe to pour dye down the drain?

    Thoroughly yours,
    Brianna

Brianna, thanks so much for your message and feedback! We have taken the safety note into consideration and appreciate this comment. As for pouring dye down the drain, always consult the dye products you are using and see if it is possible. For example, Rit Dye does specify that you can pour their dye down the drain. You should be safe to do so, but always better to check these things 🙂 Thanks so much for listening!

  2. Impressive! Thanks for sharing this.
