This episode was riveting. I’m going to listen to it again with notebook in hand.
I’ve had a sewing career in teaching for 20 years and have been itching to branch out. The generous way you share such detailed knowledge really sets you apart. You’re both such great communicators, I love that about every episode, but this one just might have changed my life. Thanks so much!
Libby, wow! Thank you so much for your kind feedback! We are so happy to hear that this episode resonated with you. We hope our advice and tips help you as you branch out 🙂
I literally just caught up to this episode as I was really starting to turn the wheels in my head about going into fashion design and fabric surface design both for my business and myself. I have a jumble of ideas in my head and been going down a rabbit hole on Google for days, and I still have no idea how to break in!
Where do you find sewing related job postings? Where do I start if I want to design my own fabric? How do I find manufacturers and suppliers? I have so many questions.
Lisa, thank you so much for your message! For sewing-related jobs, consider what avenue you want to go down. For example, if you are interested in costume design, seak out those who are already working in the field and get their expertise on where to look and find applicable jobs. As for designing your own fabric, from a personal standpoint, you can do this on Spoonflower. If you are looking into licensing, you can check out our episode with Erin Dollar who mentions her partnership with Robert Kaufman Fabrics in that episode. If you are looking into manufacturing your own prints to sell on your own, then plan some time to go a trade show like LA Textile (US), DG Expo (US), Premiere Vision (Paris), because there are tons of companies that do this kind of thing at those shows! We hope this helps 🙂
